The best LMS for online courses in 2026

Not every "course platform" is a learning management system. This guide ranks the creator LMS options on the features that decide whether learners finish: assessment, certificates, progress, and a reason to come back.

A learning management system for creators has to do two things: deliver a structured course with real assessment, and sell it. Corporate LMS products do the first and skip the second; many community platforms do the second and fake the first with a video list. This guide compares six platforms creators actually use, on the LMS features that matter and on what each costs once you have paying students. Pricing was verified June 2, 2026.

The LMS features that matter for creators

Structured curriculum: courses divided into sections and lessons, with the ability to gate later lessons until earlier ones are complete. Assessment: quizzes with more than one question type, graded automatically, with attempt limits and pass marks. Certificates: issued on completion and verifiable by a third party, because a certificate that cannot be checked is decoration. Progress tracking: per learner, visible to the learner and to you. Checkout: one-time purchases, subscriptions and bundles, with the money landing in your account.

Then the retention question. A course that ends is a customer that leaves. Platforms that pair the LMS with community and events keep learners paying after the last lesson.

1. Thinkific

Thinkific is the reference creator LMS. Basic is $49 a month with one community, Start is $99 with one community and ten spaces, Grow is $199, Expand is $499. Thinkific Payments has no transaction fee; using your own Stripe adds a 0.5% to 5% surcharge by tier. Quizzes, certificates, drip schedules and completion tracking are all mature. Community is present but secondary, and gamification and live events are not the strength.

2. Teachable

Teachable is simple and proven. Starter is $29 a month with a 7.5% transaction fee, Builder is $69, Growth is $139, Advanced is $309 with no fee; all plans bill annually and there is no free plan. Quizzes and certificates are included on the mid tiers. Community is minimal, so it suits creators selling to individuals rather than running a group.

3. Kajabi

Kajabi bundles a solid LMS with email marketing, funnels and a website builder. Basic is $179 a month for five products and 2,500 contacts, Growth is $249, Pro is $499; the $89 Kickstarter plan was retired in January 2026. Assessment and certificates are there. The price is justified only if you will use the marketing suite.

4. HiveLearn

HiveLearn combines a full LMS with a community platform. Courses are structured into sections and lessons; quizzes support multiple choice, multi-select, true or false, fill in the blank, ordering and matching, are graded server-side, and can draw from question banks. Certificates are issued on completion and verifiable at a public URL. An AI course builder drafts a complete course, with optional narrated chapter videos, from a short brief. Sales cover one-time courses, subscriptions and bundles through Stripe Connect.

Around the LMS sits the community: discussions, DMs, gamification with points and leaderboards, and live events with RSVPs, ticketing and reminders, so students have a reason to stay after the course ends. Starter is $0 a month with a 6% revenue share, so there is no monthly fee until you monetize; Growth is $39 with 4% capped at $2,000 a month; Pro is $99 with 2% capped at $3,000. Paid tiers start with a 14-day free trial and no credit card.

5. Skool

Skool is popular but it is not an LMS. The classroom is a list of modules and videos with no quizzes, no certificates and no per-lesson progress reporting. Hobby is $9 a month with a 10% transaction fee; Pro is $99 with 2.9% plus $0.30 and a 1% platform fee on sales over $899. Choose it for the community and accept that assessment lives elsewhere.

6. Circle

Circle's course builder is better than Skool's and still short of an LMS. Professional is $89 a month with a 2% transaction fee, Business is $199 with 1%, neither capped. It is the right choice when community and events lead and courses are short supporting material.

Choosing

If you sell evergreen courses to individuals and never need them to talk to each other, Thinkific or Teachable are the safe LMS choices. If you want the marketing suite too and can pay for it, Kajabi. If your course is the transformation and your community is how students get there, HiveLearn gives you both without a second subscription, and the revenue share stops growing at the cap.
